New Faculty Appointment

Dear OISE Community,

As we approach the holidays, I am delighted to announce that a new colleague will be joining OISE’s faculty in the new year. Dr. Julie Garlenbegins an appointment at the rank of Professor, with tenure, in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, effective January 1, 2025. This appointment is the result of the department’s 2023-24 search in the area of Teacher Education.

Dr. Garlen received an Ed.D. in Curriculum Studies from Georgia Southern University in 2006, joining the faculty there in 2007 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, where she earned faculty awards for research and teaching as well as a university award for service. She was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and then promoted early to Full Professor in 2017. Dr. Garlen moved to Carleton University in 2018, where she served as Co-Director and later Director of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) from 2018 to 2024. IIS comprises programs and faculty in the areas of Childhood & Youth Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Human Rights & Social Justice. As department head, Dr. Garlen’s focus was on advancing equity, accessibility, and engagement for a diverse community through program design, course development, mentorship, and student support.

Dr. Garlen’s research explores the intersections of childhood, education, cultural studies, and curriculum studies, applying critical theories and interdisciplinary perspectives to examine how cultural practices shape childhood, early learning, and teacher education. Her research has been funded by SSHRC and Mitacs, and her career publication record includes 5 co-edited books, 22 peer-reviewed articles, and 27 book chapters or non-refereed articles. Dr. Garlen’s teaching experience spans elementary, undergraduate, and graduate education, including the teaching of graduate courses across a broad range of topics in teacher education, as well as supervision at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Garlen on her appointment! I know that our OISE community will make her feel most welcome in her new role in 2025, and I wish you all the best during your well-deserved holiday break.

Warm regards,

Erica
