Research Opportunities for Students

There are several ways to get involved with the BOLD lab and gain research experience, including formal research programs (research opportunity programs, research practicum), work-study positions, honors thesis projects, and volunteering.

Volunteer Research Assistant

Most members join our lab as volunteers. Interested students should fill out this .

The current openings include a position to support research investigating the language and brain development of refugee and newcomer children who have been recently resettled in Canada. Duties will include translating standardized language measures into Dari and/or Pashto, working directly with participants, administering behavioural and neuroimaging tools, and communicating with families. Additional duties may involve data management and assisting with literature searches. Measures will be given in Pashto and/or Dari, so proficiency in either language is a requirement.

Collaborative working environment. Will be working in a team setting with several other volunteers and receive support from grad students and the principal investigator. We typically onboard new lab members at the start of each semester.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Pashto and/or Dari
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in child development OR neuroscience OR second language learning

Hours Per Week: 5-10

Schedule Details: Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Location: University of Toronto – St. George Campus; Toronto, Ontario

Training Provided: Training on the administration of psychological, cognitive, and literacy measures. Training on Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging method.

Undergraduate Students

Research Opportunity Program

Undergraduate students (2nd and 3rd year) can complete the . This is typically a year-long research project (Sept-April) developed in tandem with Dr. Jasińska. Students will work alongside a graduate student on study design, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. ROPs are posted in the Winter semester for Fall of the following academic year, and interviews are held in the Spring. 1-2 students are selected per year.

Honors Thesis/4th Year Research Paper

4th year students can complete an Honors Thesis project (e.g., HMB496, varies by program). Interested students should contact Dr. Jasińska directly. Students who completed the ROP can continue in the lab by completing an Honors Thesis project.

Work-Study

Undergraduate students can apply for . 1-3 students are hired each year.

Graduate Students

M.Ed. Research Practicum

Developmental Psychology and Education M.Ed. students can enroll in the research practicum. This is typically a year-long research project (Sept-April) developed in tandem with Dr. Jasińska. Students will work on study design, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Enrollment for the research practicum course is in the summer. 2 students are selected per year.

Doctoral Comprehensive Exam

Doctoral students in the Developmental Psychology and Education Ph.D. program can complete their second-year comprehensive exam requirement as an empirical research paper in the BOLD lab. Contact Dr. JasiÅ„ska directly.
